Muay Thai Fights

Muay Thai fight nights promoted by Horizon Thai Boxing Camp typically include six or seven fights with a few additional novice bouts.Rounds go for three minutes, with a one-minute interval, to a maximum of five rounds.

Each bout begins with the graceful and ceremonial Wai Kru dance.

The Wai Kru is a neccessary part of any Muay Thai contest. This is how Muay Thai boxers express their appreciation and gratitude towards their teachers. It also helps to calm nerves and get the fighters into a good frame of mind for the competition. Along with the wild musical accompaniment and the enthusiastic crowd of spectators, the Wai Kru certainly enhances the atmosphere. For extra excitement you can get in on the action and place a friendly bet? The referee keeps score.

At the end of the bout whichever fighter has scored the most points is the winner.

Competitors may use their feet, shins, knees, fists or elbows to attack their opponent.

Anywhere except the groin is a fair target. Head butts are not allowed. All effective Muay Thai techniques score, judged by the visible impact each blow has on an opponent. If a fighter is unable to stand by the count of 10 the judge will award a Knock Out (KO) win. Victory is also achieved if the fight is stopped because one of the fighters is too badly injured to continue fighting. If at the end of five rounds both fighters have the same number of points the contest is declared a draw.

Muay Thai Fighting

Muay Thai boxing is serious. What you see in the stadium are genuine fights at every level. The boxers attempt to knock out their opponents using punches, kicks, knees and elbows. At the same time they must protect themselves from the offensive moves of their opponent. Muay Thai is a stand-up fighting method.

The fighters may, and often do grapple in a standing position, but the fight is never allowed to continue if it goes to the ground.

Fighting in the ring is the only way for a Muay Thai boxer to test and prove the skills he has aquired during his training.

The lessons learned in the ring can be harsh, but with experience and courage Muay Thai fighters become almost indifferent to pain and punishment. You will notice that each fighter has his own style. A boxer must discover his strengths and learn to overcome his own particular weaknesses. And so, the kind of action you see from round-to-round or bout-to-bout will vary. Some boxers have a strong punch, others prefer to kick or work in the clinch. Another may be expert with the elbow or be able to throw a powerful knee. It is not the variety or prettiness of techniques that wins a fight, but their genuine practical effectiveness.

Muay Thai remains a graceful sport with rythem and style.

The fighter's movement keeps them in a constant state of readiness. It is a mistake to assume that the best fights will neccessarily be those with the heaviest contestants. It is a humbling sight to see very young Muay Thai fighters compete with skill and determination, demonstrating beautifully the inate fighting spirit of the Thai people.
