If you can't make it out to Thailand any time soon then visit the on-line Muay Thai equipment store. Muay Thai gear is shipped around the world, satisfaction guaranteed.

What to look for when buying Muay Thai gear.

General: If possible buy the highest quality equipment you can afford. Look for good quality leather and double stitching on all products. Buckle straps are better than Velcro. For authentic Muay Thai gear import direct from Thailand. Pieces are made to order so you can choose features such as type of leather, size, straps etc. And it will work out cheaper that way too.

Gloves: Use different gloves for bag work and sparring. Sparring gloves are more heavily padded. Use whatever weight glove is comfortable for you. 12oz bag gloves and 16oz sparring gloves should be ok for most people. Generally lighter gloves are used for competition.

Shin guards: Leather shin guards with padded instep are recommended for sparring practice. (Muay Thai training tip: always remove your shin guards for pad work or kicking the bags.)

Shorts: Any kind of material is fine. Look for the kind with small slits at the sides. This design allows for full freedom of movement. The zanier the design the better!

Hand wraps: Boxers at Horizon use the washable kind for training but the disposable kind for competition as they are a bit thinner.

Mouth guard: Any kind that feels comfortable to you.

Ankle supports: Many boxers feel more comfortable wearing ankle supports. The choice is yours.

Skipping rope: Make sure the skipping rope is thick and a good weight.

Kicking pads: The instructor should choose pads to suit him or her in terms of size and weight. Buckle fastenings are best. Double stitched leather construction is essential. You will need a pair of kicking pads.

Belly pad: The same goes for the belly pad as for the kicking pads but one is enough!
