Muay Thai Goes International
The WBC Establishes World Muay Thai Championships
It would be good to see a Muay Thai competition at the Olympic Games. Thai people are delighted to see more outside countries both practising and understanding Muay Thai, as it is supposed to be practised and understood.
The World Boxing Council (WBC) has now expanded into Muay Thai kickboxing and now sanctions an official Muay Thai division. It will be run by the president of the Asian Boxing Council. Titles are available in 16 weight classes, and a women's boxing division is planned for the future.
By having a worldwide organization such as the WBC sanctioning Muay Thai matches and titles, the sport is sure to have amazing growth world wide. This is a great thing for martial artists and fighters looking to get a legitimate, widely recognized title outside of the UFC, Pride, K1 or boxing.
At many Muay Thai stadiums in Thailand the people in the arena are mainly there to bet. Muay Thai fights are spectacular; in the future Muay Thai will gain a higher profile globally as a sport, martial art and effective form of self-defense.
