Frequently Asked Questions
- How much experience should I have?
Horizon Thai Boxing Camp caters to all levels – from absolute novices, with no experience at all, to experienced Muay Thai competitors.
- How fit do I need to be?
You don't need to be in really good shape. You should be reasonably fit and in good health. There is no pressure to train very hard. If you feel you’ve done enough, you can stop and rest at any time.
- Can children train at Horizon Thai Boxing Camp?
Yes, children are welcome. But only over 18s will be considered for professional competition.
- Do you accept women boxers?
Yes, female boxers are very welcome to train at Horizon Thai Boxing Camp.
- Can I compete in a stadium fight against a Thai fighter?
We can organise that for you. Assuming of course that our instructors (and the promoters) deem you to be fit to fight.
- Do I need to book ahead?
To confirm accommodation bookings we require advance payment. If you don’t want to pay ahead you can reserve a space for Muay Thai training by sending an e-mail. You are also welcome to just turn up at the camp and see what is available.
- My friend/partner doesn’t want to train. Is that a problem?
No problem at all. Koh Phangan has much to offer the visitor other than Muay Thai training. Our tropical location is the perfect spot for a relaxing seaside holiday.
- Will I have to fight?
People decide to take up Muay Thai kick boxing for many different reasons and not everyone wishes to compete. Thai boxing is a tough sport though, and controlled contact sparring is a normal part of Muay Thai training in Thailand.
- Do I need a visa for Thailand?
Most nationalities are granted a 30-day stay on arrival to Thailand. If you plan to stay in Thailand for more than 30 days apply for a tourist visa in advance. Check with your nearest Thai Embassy or Consulate. You should have at least six months validity remaining on your passport.
- What vaccinations will I need?
There are no required vaccinations for entry into Thailand but it is a good idea to make sure you are protected against certain diseases. Your Doctor can advise you. Make an appointment at least six weeks before you are due to travel.
- Do I need to take malaria tablets?
Koh Phangan and Bangkok are parts of Thailand considered to be free from risk of malaria. If you are joining one of our tours, which include brief visits to regions bordering with Burma (April) and Laos (Feb), your Doctor may advise you to take anti-malarial medicines. The World Health Organisation (WHO) can give you the latest advice: www.who.int
- What is the current health and political situation in Thailand?
You can get up-do-date information from the World Health Organisation (WHO). www.who.int
- What should I bring?
As little as possible! One medium-sized suitcase, backpack or shoulder bag should do it. Pack lightweight, natural-fibre clothes. Slip-on sandals are a very good idea. Not only are they cooler, they are easily removed before entering a Thai home or temple. You’ll need to bring at least one good pair of running shoes in addition to the shoes you wear every day. Bring one set of warm clothes, as the air-conditioned coaches can feel cold.
- What currency is used in Thailand?
The currency in Thailand is the Thai baht. Money is easily exchanged everywhere. You can bring cash or travellers cheques; English pounds, euros and US dollars are fine. ATMs (Automated Teller Machines), where cash can be drawn on credit or debit cards, are widely available. You may wish to bring some Thai baht with you from home to avoid a rush changing money at the airport. Visit www.xe.com/ucc for current exchange rates.
- How much spending money will I need?
Not a lot! Most things are cheaper in Thailand than in Europe. For example, a meal will cost 50 - 150 baht. A small beer or fruit juice will set you back about 50 -100 baht. Taxis cost 50 - 150 baht. Tickets for Muay Thai fight nights are 500 baht.
- Is there anything I can’t get in Thailand?
You can get almost anything in Thailand, although some imported items can be expensive. Large-size clothing can be a problem, shoes and hats in particular. Running shoes are not available everywhere; you should bring at least one pair with you. For the women, bring a sports bra from home. Tampons are not available in some rural areas.
- Do I need travel insurance?
This is a very good idea. We advise all our customers to purchase their own travel insurance. The travel agent where you buy your flight tickets should be able to cover your insurance needs. You can also shop around for a good deal.
- What will the weather be like?
The weather in Thailand is nearly always hot and humid. Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses are a must for most people. In the south, at Horizon Thai Boxing Camp, the hottest, driest time is usually around April. We see the most rain between September and December. This is the monsoon period and it is often windy. Rough seas sometimes make it difficult to stop boats in Haad Tien bay any time from October through to February.
- Can I bring a friend or partner?
Yes, there is a great deal more to enjoy at Horizon than just Muay Thai Boxing. It is a magnificent holiday location. If Muay Thai boxing is not your thing there are all kinds of other things to do in the local area. You could enjoy a relaxing day at the spa or learn yoga, take a course in Thai massage or learn to cook Thai food. You could take a boat trip or diving course, or explore the island’s coastal trails. Or simply relax in your hammock with a good book. If your friend or partner doesn’t want to train let us know and a reduction can be made to the final cost of the trip.
- I’ve paid my deposit for the tour. What happens now?
You will be sent confirmation of your booking. Final payments for the all inclusive Thai boxing tours are due at least two months before the date your tour is due to start, otherwise your place on the tour cannot be guaranteed.
- What happens when we arrive in Bangkok?
If you are joining one of our Muay Thai tours you will be met at the airport by Horizon Thai Boxing Camp staff when you first arrive in Bangkok, They will direct you to transport, which will take you to the hotel. There will be a brief meeting in the hotel lobby shortly after arrival for introductions and orientation.
- I don’t want to join a tour. I just want to come and train.
If you are planning to come and stay at Horizon Thai Boxing Camp to train it is a good idea to e-mail us beforehand to let us know when you plan to come. We can advise you of the accommodation situation. We offer deals on accommodation with training. It is no problem if you prefer to stay at another resort and come over to Horizon Thai Boxing Camp every day for Muay Thai training sessions. To confrim bookings advance payment is required at least one month before arrival.
- Are there any customs I should be aware of?
Thai’s are extremely tolerant of almost all kinds of behaviour and never expect Westerners to understand the intricacies of Thai social customs. However, by following a few very simple rules you can gain respect, which will inevitably make your stay in Thailand that much more enjoyable.
1. Always remove your shoes (socks are OK) before entering a Thai home or temple. If you’re not sure, watch other people. A pile of other people’s shoes at the entrance is your clue to remove yours.
2. Nudity is never acceptable. Swimming gear is fine for the beach but if you are going into town cover up. Vest tops and shorts are OK for most situations, but girls please don’t go shopping in your bikinis.
3.Above all, always keep a cool heart! Shouting or other displays of bad temper are guaranteed to offend and will never be productive.
